Model Solar Boats

BOATS:  Junior and Advanced

Boats are intended to be designed and constructed by the students consequently I will not be providing detailed plans. I will however point you towards the extensive data available to guide you. Remember there are committee members and other schools who are always willing to assist, as a first port of call go to Contact us and email your questions to the technical help contact.

To begin with read the regulations then look at some photographs of previous boats and I strongly suggest some video also. With this background then go to Model Solar Boat Guide by Wayne Young.  This document was written for students and contains detailed information on building a simple boat manufactured from off the shelf components with only basic hand tools. Some excellent project management guidance is also contained in this publication.

The Model Solar Boat Master Workshop document has large amounts of technical data at a higher level of complexity than the Guide by Wayne Young it is really better suited to teachers and senior boat competitors.

The data included in the publications above is relevant to both the Junior and Advanced competition, just utilise those portions that are relevant to your particular situation.

The Buying Guide lists suppliers of the more specialised and harder to locate components and material.

We have provided a variety of teacher resources, curriculum planning documents and student worksheets. These have been developed and used by various teachers in the Macedon Ranges Cluster.
